Emmanuel Macron, a global investment banker, and civil servant has recently won the vote for president-elect and became the official president, Sunday, May 14th, 2017. He was most commonly known for his political party En Marche which had nearly 200,000 members. A study proved that 43% of France voted for Macron because they disliked his opponent while 24% voted for him because they agreed with him. When Al Jazeera, a media outlet, interviewed the general public of France, results showed that the vast majority of the youth disagreed with Macron’s plans for France’s reform, and were labeled as “neo-liberal” or in other words, favoring free market capitalism. A possible reason that such a large population stands against Macron was that of his inclination to modify France’s 35-hour working week and tax of the wealthy. Others support Macron because of his promises of cutting costs, such as corporate tax, decreasing it by 8% from 33% to 25%. Macron is also making the bold claim that during his presidency, he will cut more than $65 billion of total spending, leaving France with more money to spend as they please. Some claim that this kind of budget cut could result in 120,000 senator positions being lost. Macron is also an advocate of the European Union (EU) and plans to take in many refugees. Although Macron wants to strengthen the borders, he believes that the police of France have been unjustly targeting Muslims. In a rally on October 2016, Macron stated “ No religion is a problem in France today. If the state should be neutral, which is at the heart of secularism, we have a duty to let everybody practice their religion with dignity.” As stated before, Emanuel's political party is En Marche!. However, between the years of 2006-2009, Macron was a member of the Socialist party. Then, in the years 2009 through 2016, Macron discontinued his relationship with the party, and then joined En Marche. Recently, President Macron has appointed Édouard Philippe as prime minister of France. Philippe is a politician and French lawyer, who began serving as prime minister on May 15, 2017. As of right now, France stands divided regarding the citizens’ thoughts and opinions of Macron, but one thing is for certain, no one knows what the future holds.
